In a rather surprising decision, Donald Trump suggested Pete Hegseth, a news anchor at Fox News, become the Secretary of Defense. Hegseth, 44, is an officer in the National Guard and deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, and he has also worked as a television host. The nomination is quite unusual not only in terms of Pentagon leadership traditions but also because Hegseth has mostly a media background and would be going straight from being a talk show host to one of the most important positions in the government’s military structure.
Hegseth has also been in the military and has served in both Iraq and Afghanistan earning two bronze star awards. He proceeded to media, and at the year 2014, he joined Fox News working as a contributor after his time of active duty was done. He became also the co-host of Fox and Friends Weekend, shows for Fox Nation, and turned into a conservative activist for issues regarding the military and veterans.
The Princeton and Harvard graduate has remained in touch with the military personnel, though he famously rejected his Harvard degree due to what he said was a left-wing bias at the university. He has other works in books too such as ‘The War on Warriors’ which Trump endorsed for condemning the military policies and for supporting changes.
Hegseth’s connection with Trump is already revealing influence on military strategy. In 2019, his advocacy paved for two service members’ presidential pardon accused of murder, and the reinstatement of another’s rank after being convicted for posing with a corpse in Iraq. They raised discussions within the military regarding discipline and responsibility.
Still based in Tennessee with his wife, Hegseth, and seven children, he has a different look and feel than most Pentagon chiefs. In the announcement, Trump highlighted Hegsetk’s focus on the ‘America First’ policy, and pledged to make the military ‘merit-based, lethal, accountable and excellent.’
