fans disappointed as merseyside derby cancelled for safety reasons
The Premier League has been in action every week and this coming Saturday’s Merseyside derby Everton Liverpool clash was due to be played in blizzard conditions with freezing temperatures. The match scheduled to be played at Goodison Park was abandoned after a safety advisory group meeting that involved club representatives as well as Merseyside police and representatives of the Liverpool city council. The decision was made following a severe wind warning, with authorities concerned for the lives of football fans, players, and residents in the communities during the storm Darragh.
This postponement is one of the defining moments in both clubs’ football history, especially because this was supposed to be the last Merseyside Premier League derby before Everton moved to its new stadium from Goodison Park which has been its home since 1892. Before this, Merseyside police had warned people to stay off the roads, saying the weather was serious. Liverpool, the current league holders said as much but echoed the same sentiments; safety takes precedence over any match whether league or friendly.
Both clubs have agreed to release a new date for the fixture in the next few days with specifics concerning tickets to follow. Liverpool will turn their attention to their Champions League fixture against Girona on Tuesday while Everton will face Arsenal next Saturday. Not only these two teams but also the two Championship fixtures were also washed out due to similarly unfavorable climate conditions.
