European Cities Flood with Pro-Palestine Rallies

Last updated on November 8th, 2023 at 09:11 am

European cities became the stage for a powerful and remarkable expression of solidarity, as thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered to demand a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict. Their message was loud and clear: an immediate end to the hostilities. Let’s take a closer look at these extraordinary protests in key European cities.

Rallies All Across Europe

The heart of London’s protests was Trafalgar Square, where a wave of placards and Palestinian flags painted a vivid picture of unity. Chants such as “Stop the massacre in Gaza” and “Ceasefire now” reverberated through the square. While the primary intent of the protests was peace, it was not without challenges. London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest of 29 individuals.

Among them, two were detained for their banner’s wording, and one faced arrest for making antisemitic comments during a speech. Additional arrests included those for inciting racial hatred and assaulting a police officer. Notably, the demonstrations saw the use of fireworks, aimed towards a police barricade.

Piccadilly Circus was another focal point for the protests, with three arrests, one of which led to a terrorism charge due to provocative signage.

Berlin, the capital of Germany, witnessed around 6,000 protesters marching through the city center. The need to maintain order during these gatherings led to the deployment of approximately 1,000 police officers. Earlier protests had turned violent, prompting officials to enact a ban on public statements promoting antisemitism, anti-Israel sentiment, or glorification of violence and terror.

In Paris, demonstrators gathered with impactful signs bearing messages like “Stop the cycle of violence” and “To do nothing, to say nothing is to be complicit.” Their chants of “Palestine will live, Palestine will win” and “Stop the massacre in Gaza” resonated throughout the city.

Despite French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin’s initial ban on pro-Palestinian gatherings due to concerns about potential disturbances, Paris’ police chief authorized a march from République to Nation. However, it was emphasized that behavior deemed antisemitic or supportive of terrorism would not be tolerated.

In the Romanian capital, Bucharest, hundreds of demonstrators congregated, many waving Palestinian flags while chanting, “Save the children from Gaza.”

A compelling video shared on social media captured a unique moment in Malmö, Sweden, where a man set a small Israeli flag on fire and then threw it to the ground. This happened during a small gathering of protesters outside a synagogue, where Palestinian flags were also prominently displayed.

These demonstrations are a testament to the shared concern for the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Israel-Hamas conflict. The demonstrators united for a common cause—seeking a swift ceasefire. Their collective voice echoes the shared suffering and pain caused by the ongoing violence.
