Serbia’s Withdrawal Threat
Serbia has threatened to withdraw from EURO 2024, following the controversial chants from Albanian and Croatian fans. During their clash in Hamburg on Wednesday, fans allegedly chanted “Kill, Kill, Kill the Serb” during the 2-2 draw, inciting Serbia to demand action from UEFA.
The general secretary of the Football Association of Serbia, Jovan Surbatovic, stated that a formal complaint has been handed over to UEFA. He expressed anger over the incident and suggested that Serbia might pull out of the tournament if UEFA fails to punish the offenders. Surbatovic said “If UEFA doesn’t punish them, we will think about how to proceed.”
Serbia’s Own Controversy
Serbia faces its own challenges as UEFA has charged them for incidents during their defeat by England on Sunday. Serbian fans were reported for throwing objects inside the stadium and flashing provocative banners in Gelsenkirchen. These actions were highly criticized, especially when Kosovo Football Federation’s complaints about political and racist messages from Serbian fans.
Today’s Match: Serbia vs. Slovenia
Serbia is all set to face Slovenia today at the Allianz Arena, despite the off field controversies. Jovan Surbatovic thanked all the Serbian fans for their love and support against England and expressed confidence for a victory against Slovenia.
Key Players to Watch
Serbia: Known for his goal scoring prowess, Aleksander Mitrovic will be the key player to watch. His ability to find the net in crucial moments could be decisive.
Slovenia: With his creative playmaking and experience, Josip IIicic will be pivotal for Slovenia. His vision and passing can unlock defenses and create scoring opportunities.
