eu uae trade negotiations strategic partnership
The European Union (EU) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are enhancing their economic and strategic relationship via extensive trade and partnership talks which were initiated in April 2025. The agenda of these discussions is to open up the trade in goods and services, increase the level of cooperation in strategic areas such as technology and energy as well as boost the investment between the two areas. As the third negotiation is ongoing in Dubai, the EU and the UAE are on the road to an ambitious Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and Strategic Partnership Agreement, which visualizes their common vision of future sustainable growth, innovation, and resiliency in a changing global trade environment.
The Free Trade Agreement negotiations between the EU and UAE are underway and both parties are aiming at the elimination of trade barriers and establishment of a streamlined system of commerce and investment. The two parties are in the process of negotiating the FTA in order to boost trade in goods and services and energy and facilitate collaboration in other fields like in digital technology and artificial intelligence. Simultaneously, a Strategic Partnership Agreement is under development to enhance cooperation in research and innovation as well as sustainability- showing a mutual commitment to long-term and diversified cooperation more comprehensive than the traditional systems of trade.
From 2024, the UAE has been the region’s second-highest trade partner with goods trade worth €55.6 billion and services trade worth over €39 billion, both with the EU. The dynamic and balanced trade relationship expressed in the form of EU exports to the UAE increased by 15% over a period of one year and almost 50% over 2019. The total investments made from the EU to the UAE amount to approximately €186 billion and Emirati investments in Europe are on a constant rise in the sectors of renewable energy, infrastructure, and high technology. Moreover, the number of Europeans that live in the UAE is far in excess of 200,000, further diversifying the nature of the people-to-people, as well as cultural ties that form the bedrock of this agreement.
Besides economic collaboration, the EU and UAE are converging on other areas of priorities such as climate sustainability, education, innovation, and global stability. The joint venture aims to create a future based partnership that can respond to the emerging world trends in global trade such as the fluctuating tariffs in the United States and international tax systems. The EU and the UAE are in the process of establishing a strong, innovative, and mutually rewarding relationship that will amplify prosperity in different regions.
