Easter is a joyous occasion for Christians all around the world as it commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ after three days of earnest Good Friday, the day when Jesus Christ was crucified. With Easter 2025 nearing, people also refer to the auspicious day before as Holy Saturday.
Known worldwide as ‘a moveable feast’, Easter got the name due to there being no definite date fixed every year. Like Christmas which is always celebrated on 25 December, Easter follows the Lunar Calendar for calculation. Easter in 2025 falls on 20 April, observed right on the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon, that is followed after the spring equinox.
Jesus Christ was crucified by the Romans, according to the New Testament in the Bible, and buried under the orders of Pontius Pilate. After three days of the burial, Jesus Christ was resurrected, symbolising hope, new life and as a testament of triumph over sin and evil.
Marking the foundation of Christian Belief, Easter is also the end of the 40 days Lent period that is a period for fasting, prayer and self reflection of one’s own actions. The last week leading up to Easter is also considered Holy with the Thursday before Good Friday is known as Maundy Thursday, also known when Jesus had his Last Supper while the Saturday is considered as Holy as a period of awaiting the resurrection and hope.
Easter is a family celebration time with hope and faith reflected among the loved ones. The day begins with attending church services on Saturday night or Sunday morning. Exchanging gifts, decorating Easter Eggs that are a reflection of rebirth and new life along with the presence of Easter Bunny for children and egg hunt adding to the joy.
