The President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Dr. Marty Makary to lead the Food and Drug Administration in his second term of government. Dr. Makary is a surgeon and author and became well-known for opposing vaccine mandates and some public health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Makary is a professor at Johns Hopkins University. He has called the U.S. health system “broken” and promised change. Along with this nomination Trump also named Dr. Dave Weldon. Dr. Dave Weldon is a former Republican congressman from Florida, leads the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fox News contributor Janette Nesheiwat is set to become the next surgeon general.
The views of Dr. Makary share similarities with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s pick for Secretary of Health and Human Services. Both have criticized overprescribing drugs, the use of pesticides on food and the influence of pharmaceutical and insurance companies on healthcare.
