Public criticism, rowdy soccer fans and torrential downpours haven’t stopped a group of beyond die-hard Taylor Swift fans in Argentina from camping outside Buenos Aires’ River Plate Stadium in their quest to get as close to their idol as possible.
Ahead of Swift’s three Argentina shows, which kick off November 9, as part of her Eras Tour’s Latin American stretch, hundreds of fans have been occupying four tents outside the stadium, taking turns in carefully planned rotations.
A majority of the camp dwellers have general admission floor tickets. An internal spreadsheet keeps track of around 60 folks per tent. Based on a ranking system gathering everybody’s total time, the longer you have been in a tent, the higher the chances of being one of the first in line.
While no fan is required to stay in a tent 24 hours a day, the internal rules explicitly benefit those who are willing to put in the extra effort. Camping during a storm grants you double the hours (although rain and drizzle don’t count), as does spending a full night in the tents.
To maintain one’s spot, sleepovers are compulsory at least once a month, alongside a minimum of 60 monthly hours. “The fact that there are so many people makes things easier. We all have different schedules, and you fit yours amongst them,” said Irina, 20.
Although the four tents are set to the side of the street, they are still exposed to the public. There have been serious concerns, surrounding weather conditions and safety. Soccer fans sometimes shout at the campers, but no major disturbances have taken place.
Insults from passersby are common. But the police are amicable most of the time. The Eras Tour boosts economies wherever it lands. The Super Bowl-sized event spanning numerous cities has shattered records and pushed Taylor Swift into the coveted Billionaires club.
