cyprus leads the way opening a sea route for gaza humanitarian aid (1)
The pressing humanitarian crisis in Gaza has compelled an international coalition to take action. Today, the European Commission, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, the Republic of Cyprus, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States collectively announce the intent to open a maritime corridor to deliver crucial humanitarian aid by sea.
At the forefront of this endeavor is the Republic of Cyprus, whose proactive leadership in establishing the Amalthea Initiative paved the way for this joint effort. The Amalthea Initiative serves as a blueprint for securely shipping aid from Cyprus to Gaza via sea routes, ensuring the efficient and safe delivery of essential supplies to those in need.
This initiative underscores the importance of collaboration on both regional and international fronts. Working in tandem with UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza, Sigrid Kaag, our coalition aims to facilitate, coordinate, monitor, and verify the seamless flow of aid into Gaza, as mandated by UN Security Council Resolution 2720.
Moreover, the unwavering support and mobilization efforts of the United Arab Emirates have been instrumental in advancing this cause. The UAE’s dedication has already led to the initial shipment of food by sea to the people of Gaza, marking a significant step forward in addressing the immediate needs of the affected population.
As we embark on this humanitarian mission, our nations are committed to expanding the scope and efficacy of aid delivery to Gaza. Cyprus will convene senior officials to explore avenues for accelerating the maritime channel, complementing existing land and air routes, including those from Egypt and Jordan.
In parallel, the United States has announced an emergency mission led by its military to establish a temporary pier in Gaza, in close coordination with humanitarian partners and other countries. These collaborative efforts will ensure the swift and substantial delivery of assistance by sea, with due consideration given to the logistical complexities involved.
Recognizing the multifaceted challenges posed by the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, our coalition remains committed to a sustained and comprehensive approach. The activation of the maritime corridor represents a pivotal step in increasing the flow of humanitarian aid and commercial commodities into Gaza through all available routes.
Moving forward, we will continue to engage with Israel to expand deliveries by land, advocating for the facilitation of more routes and the opening of additional crossings to reach a greater number of people in need. Upholding the principles of international humanitarian law, we affirm our collective responsibility to protect civilian lives and ensure that aid reaches those who need it most.
The activation of the maritime corridor signifies a united front in addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of the Gaza Strip. Through collaboration, coordination, and sustained efforts, we are determined to make a tangible difference in the lives of the vulnerable populations affected by this crisis.
