coco gauff naomi osaka us open showdown
A fourth-round match between Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka will illuminate the Arthur Ashe Stadium at the 2025 US Open on Monday. Gauff, a 21-year-old third seed and a Florida native, is now one of the brightest lights in tennis, and Osaka, who is a 27-year-old No. 23 seed, is looking to regain the power she once had on hard courts that made her nearly unbeatable. Three US Open trophies and a long history between them that dates to the heartfelt meeting in 2019 make this encounter potentially intense, dramatic, and worthy of a championship title.
One of the most interesting plotlines in the sport is the Gauff-Osaka rivalry. In 2019, Osaka overpowered a 15-year-old Gauff and went on to console her in one of the most iconic moments in US Open history. The balance of power has since changed. Gauff has become a Grand Slam champion and took three of the last four matches to win the maiden US Open in 2024 and now leads their head-to-head record 3-2.
Osaka is, nonetheless, a tough guy. She is a four-time Grand Slam champion and two-time US Open champion (2018, 2020), and her explosive baseline game still bothers even the most defensive on tour. Osaka will seek to control rallies and deny Gauff any chance to find a rhythm with her mighty serve and her iconic forehand.
Gauff, however, enters with a lot of momentum. Her serve has gone much better under new coaching, which has been a major contributor to the French Open victory she had earlier this season. Her athleticism, defense, and how she plays defense as an attack are a nightmare to play with.
The Gauff–Osaka clash headlines a jam-packed Day 9 schedule at Flushing Meadows. Prior to the battle between the two, Andrey Rublev [15] will face Felix Auger-Aliassime [25] at 11:30 AM ET on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Jannik Sinner [1] plays Alexander Bublik [23] then Amanda Anisimova plays Beatriz Haddad Maia the day before at night.
In Louis Armstrong Stadium, Alex de Minaur [8] plays against Leandro Riedi, and World No. 2 Iga Swiatek plays against Ekaterina Alexandrova [13]. Doubles action and junior battles also come to the Grandstand and outer courts, so that the fans around the grounds can enjoy high-stakes tennis the whole day through.
Nevertheless, every one of them will focus on Arthur Ashe as soon as Gauff and Osaka enter the field. It is an encounter between generations, a rematch with history, and a contest that may shape the future of the women’s draw. The victor is not only guaranteed a quarterfinal position, but he also enhances his argument as the player to reckon with in New York.
