Seoul Hosts First China-Japan-South Korea Summit Since 2019

A formal trilateral summit between the leaders of China, Japan, and South Korea begins in Seoul. It is an important event to enhance relations on friction in the Asia Pacific region, promote trade, and reduce regional security issues and tensions. This meeting is taking place after 2019.

Fumio Kishida the PM of Japan, Li Qiang the Chinese Premier, and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will engage for the talk today on Monday. Yesterday on Sunday they met for bilateral discussions.

This meeting is taking place after 5 years, although these countries are close in terms of their geopolitical position. The reason for this is the Covid 19 pandemic and the subsequent increased tension in the Red Sea and Asia Pacific region.

Japan and South Korea tried to improve their relations with the United States, putting China under tension as the US increased its power in the APAC region.

This meeting is important because China will try to find some way to remain in the chip manufacturing market, as it is clear that China is opposing America’s strict chip manufacturing policies. Still, America is trying to deny China access to the chip market and using South Korea and Japan to restrict Chinese access in the market.

On Sunday Chinese Li told Yoon Suk Yeol that turning economic issues into political issues is not beneficial, and China welcomed Samsung Electronics Co. to expand investment in China.

Fumio Kishida the PM of Japan expressed his concern about the East China Sea and Taiwan Strait.

During his talk, he said Chinese military drills around Taiwan always raise tension in the region.

Apart from these talks, these three countries will aim to cooperate in 6-key sectors that is sustainable development, people-to-people exchanges as well as economy, and trade.

Japan and South Korea also want China to curb North Korea’s nuclear ambitions.

Let us tell you that North Korea announced that they are planning to launch a rocket to deploy a satellite. Japan, South Korea and the US have said North Korea’s space program helps it develop ballistic missiles and a launch was reported at the trilateral meeting to focus attention on Pyongyang’s weapons program.

US Should Keep an Eye on China, Japan, and South Korea Meeting

The US should focus on the China-Japan-South Korea talks as these discussions could significantly impact regional security dynamics and economic policies in the Asia-Pacific. Strengthened cooperation among these nations could alter the balance of power, influencing US interests and its strategic positioning in the region. Additionally, these talks could address key issues like North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, which directly affect US security concerns.
