Autumn Unveiled: Chicago’s October 2025 — A Windy City Bucket List

Come October 2025, Chicago is a city filled with fall delights that range from that quintessential autumn breeze to the event extravaganza that covers the whole city. Whichever one of these four (or rather five) you are: lover of art, seeker of thrills, lover of food, history buff- here are the must-dos this month:

Embrace the Fall Foliage

Summer’s green grass slowly fades, the city’s parks and lakeshore turn into the most glorious autumnal display of vivid oranges, reddish browns and yellows. Lincoln Park, Jackson Park, the Lakefront Trail, and Morton Arboretum have some of the best fallscapes for this year.

Cruise Through Architecture & Skyline

It’s definitely better to take the building river tour in October since the weather is chilly, there are fewer tourists, and you get to enjoy the beauty of the sun in your face and shadows over the glass facade of the skyline. If you combine this with a lake cruise then you’re guaranteed to have an amazing view of the skyscrapers stretching out along the lake.

In the close neighbourhood, the Chicago River

•1.5-hour guided cruise and family-friendly tours proceed frequently.

Dive into Film & Performance

One very important event that film buffs cannot afford to miss is the 61st Chicago International Film Festival which is held from Oct 15 to 26, with the screenings spread across all the cinemas and cultural venues in the city.

Besides this, theater lovers will definitely not be bored with the great productions and shows happening simultaneously – for example, the musicals The Book of Mormon and The Lion King, and the immersive show Paranormal Activity.

Visit Must-See Exhibits

It is October that signifies the beginning of “Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind” exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art – Chicago is the ONLY U.S. stop for this major retrospective.

There are also some amazing attractions you shouldn’t miss, like ‘Wonder of Water’ at Shedd Aquarium and the ‘Inhibited’ art exhibitions at museums around the city.

Autumn & Halloween Magic

The fall mood of the city, with pumpkin patches, scary barn displays, and Halloween events scattered across the city.

An Open House Chicago weekend allows architecture enthusiasts to tour the structures that they don’t usually have access to, for free!

The likes of Randolph Street Market aren’t only bringing their outside fair indoors but also combining the indoor-outdoor events in October, full of crafts, antiques, and delicious local flavours.

Concerts, Candlelight & Nightlife

The candlelight concerts are truly memorable – in the past you would be captivated by the likes of Queen under flickering flames while this month the theme is Halloween.

Other events of great appeal:

•Riot Fest 2025 will be back with a fantastic lineup and great festival activities.

•Hyde Park Jazz Festival will be giving free performances in memory of the Black music tradition.

Plan Your Days Smartly

•Why don’t you start with a river cruise and then do some museum hopping when the sun gets too strong?

•Experience theatrical drama during the evening and then take a stroll among the Autumn dead leaves to revel in their rustling or attend a scary walking tour.

•Check Chicago’s weather forecasts before you make your plans as October can sometimes be quite a surprise.
Autumn in Chicago is a blend of changes that catch the eye, delight the ear, and challenge the mind. The very first day of October, the city is slowly turning into its peak-season of discovery – and if you are here for a day or a week, you will find that the magic of fall is waiting everywhere for you to come and admire it.
