bollywood actress katrina kaif announced as ambassador of visit maldives political timing of modis visit stirs the debate pot
Maldives now has a new, famous and fresh face as their Global Ambassador for the country’s Tourism sector. The announcement was made by Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) on Tuesday. In an aim to enhance the Tourism appeal, the move couldn’t have dropped at a more relatable time as the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting the country soon.
Announcing the actress’ new role in promoting Maldives, the MMPRC managing director Thoyyib Mohamed shared, “Having Katrina Kaif as our Global Brand Ambassador is a moment of great pride for us. “Her popularity, combined with her influence in the global entertainment industry, will undoubtedly help us attract more visitors from across the world, especially from India.”
Katrina Kaif also shared her thoughts and delight in joining as the Global Ambassador said, “The Maldives represents the pinnacle of luxury and natural beauty—a place where elegance meets tranquillity. I’m honoured to be chosen as the face of the Sunny Side of Life. This collaboration is about bringing the finest travel experiences to global audiences, and I’m excited to help people around the world discover the unique charm and world-class offerings of this extraordinary destination.”
The ties between India and Maldives have been full of ups and downs as the stunning water bound country also depends on the citizens and Indian sub continent for the majority of its tourist visitors. While the island nation criticised the Indian PM for promoting the tourism of Lakshadweep from last year, which may have been seen as a way of diverting tourist attention from Maldives.
This led to many of the Maldives diplomats accusing and throwing names at the Indian PM, resulting in many Indian tourists cancelling their plans. The crack was later addressed and sorted out as Mohamed Muizzu, President of Maldives visited India in October 2024. The visit also reassured the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy with India investing $50 Million Treasury‐bill rollover interest‑free to support Maldives’ fiscal reforms and help address its debt pressures.
