The mood on Capitol Hill was tense after the Democrats’ debate on the topic, “Should Biden step down?”. Whether to support President Joe Biden’s re-election or urge him to step down is now a big question among Democrats. After the CNN debate show questions are raising over his ability to win.
House and Senate Democrats met privately to discuss this matter and ended with a mix of emotions and uncertainty.
In the House, the discussions were described as “sad” and “sad”. Lawmakers were in confusion about the party’s leader’s refusal to step down. They are worried about the threat posed by Republican Donald Trump. In the Senate, Biden had a long career, and there was even less discussion.
Representative Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey became the seventh House Democrat to publicly call for Biden not to run for re-election.
Instead of uniting around their president Biden Democrats are trying to skip the trouble. They are worried about losing both the White House and Congress. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York said members had an opportunity to express their views behind closed doors and that those discussions would continue.
As the Democratic National Convention approaches the party faces a critical moment with questions over Biden’s leadership. While some Democrats continue to support Biden. But the Senate Democrats have remained largely silent to express anything publicly.
Senator Chris Coons of Delaware said that the consensus was to focus on the threat posed by Trump. During a private House meeting, many leaders expressed concerns that Biden staying in the race would shift the election focus to his age rather than Trump.
Around 20 Democratic lawmakers spoke during the nearly two-hour session many are in support that Biden should end his candidacy. Representative Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, a vocal critic, was among those advocating for Biden to step aside.
Representatives like Jerry Nadler of New York is in support of Biden. He said on CNN, “He’s our candidate, and we’re going to support him.”
Representative Adriano Espaillat of New York also expressed loyalty to Biden, noting his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. “He was fit then and he’s fit now,” Espaillat said.
Many Democrats worry not only about the presidency but also about their races for the House and Senate.
After a Senate lunch meeting, most senators avoided making definitive statements about Biden’s candidacy.
Representative Jared Huffman of California, who leads the House Democrats’ task force against Project 2025, stated that Democrats could still win with Biden. However, he added that if Biden’s decision changes, “that’s not the end of the world.”
So the political drama over Biden’s presidency will continue until the Democrats agree on a single statement. Team Trump will definitely try to take advantage of it and turn the election around “Biden’s AGE”.
