Backlash as Veterans Groups Criticize Trump’s Campaign Activity at Arlington

Donald Trump’s recent visit to Arlington National Cemetery has sparked debate from veterans’ groups former service members in Congress, and even a former cabinet official from his administration. The visit was intended to honor fallen soldiers but quickly it turned into controversy due to the actions of the campaigner team of Trump.

Reports surfaced that Trump’s staff allegedly harassed and physically pushed an Arlington official who attempted to stop them from photographing Section 60—the area reserved for veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Despite federal regulations prohibiting political activity at military cemeteries, Trump’s team used footage from the visit in a campaign video posted on TikTok. The campaign defended their actions, claiming they had permission to bring in a photographer while denying any physical altercation.

The visit drew immediate criticism, particularly for Trump’s inappropriate behavior, including giving a thumbs-up and smiling widely during a graveside photo op. Veterans organizations quickly voiced their outrage.

Trump’s Controversial Question: Is Kamala Harris Black or Indian?

VoteVets is a progressive veterans’ group that has also condemned Trump’s actions, accusing him of exploiting the sacrifices of fallen soldiers for personal gain. Retired Maj. General Paul Eaton who is an advisor for VoteVets, expressed deep disgust, stating that starting a political conflict on such sacred ground was beyond reprehensible.

Veterans for Responsible Leadership, a non-partisan group, also condemned the visit, accusing Trump of violating the sanctity of Arlington and disregarding the code of conduct for military cemeteries.

The Trump campaign attempted to counter the criticism by highlighting support from the Marine veterans who had invited Trump to the event, marking the third anniversary of the 2021 Kabul airport bombing. They insisted that the campaign had acted with the utmost respect during the visit.

Will Trump and Harris Debate? Mic Controversy Sparks Speculation

Trump’s previous administration also condemned this visit of Trump. Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper called for an investigation into the incident, emphasizing that Arlington National Cemetery should never be used for partisan political purposes.

Many veterans serving in Congress are also criticizing. Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-MA) is a former Marine criticized the actions of Donald Trump as part of a troubling pattern.

The controversy surrounding the visit of Trump to Arlington has increased the gap between the former president and many in the veteran community. It also raises questions about the respect and reverence given to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
