Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber appointed as President-Designate for COP28 by Sheikh Mansour
His Excellency Dr Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber has been appointed as President-Designate for the upcoming 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28).
His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Presidential Court, named Al Jaber the President-Designate for the UN climate change conference under the directive of the UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Al Jaber, the UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change, is also the founding CEO of the Abu Dhabi-based renewable energy company, Masdar.
Shamma Al Mazrui has been appointed as COP28 UAE Youth Climate Champion and Razan Al Mubarak has been appointed as COP28 UAE-UN Climate Change High-Level Champion.
The UAE will host the annual climate summit at Expo City in Dubai from 30 November to 12 December 2023. Around 70,000 participants are expected at the event.
The UAE’s commitment towards climate goals, net-zero goals, clean energy, biodiversity, as well as food and water security has helped the country towards transformational progress for the upcoming COP28.

In recent years, the UAE adopted many strategies to protect the environment. The UAE’s various initiatives towards climate goals have helped to mitigate the effects of climate change. The UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative was launched to achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050. The UAE also established the Independent Climate Change Accelerators (UICCA) to work in the field of climate change.
Last year, the UAE also announced plans to invest around Dh600 billion in clean energy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The country invested in renewable projects in over 70 developed and developing countries. The UAE has also planned to invest a minimum of $50 billion over the next decade.
The UAE and the United States also signed a comprehensive strategic partnership for $100 billion of investments in clean energy projects.
Last year, the UAE also topped the Arab countries in the Food Security Index for the second quarter of 2022. The UAE also launched the National Food Security Strategy to achieve food security.
The UAE has three of the largest and lowest-cost solar projects in the world. The UAE has appointed a strong leadership team to support COP28.
Mariam bint Mohammed Saeed Hareb Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), has appreciated UAE’s progress in recent years.
The UAE’s presidency of COP28 is important to mitigate the effects of climate change. Al Jaber has reportedly said, “This will be a critical year in a critical decade for climate action.”
The UAE could build consensus and coalitions to achieve climate neutrality. It can work together with all stakeholders to promote the importance of climate neutrality.
